The Best Way to Speak English Fluently

Article by Jeff Long

So you are looking for the best way to speak English fluently… You are in the right place. In this article I’m going to show you how to work on your English skills and become a fluent speaker even within a few months (if you already speak some English, and… you do if you are reading this article in English).

So, what is the best way to speak English fluently? Here’s a quick story.

Back in the days, I was really bad at languages. There were dozens of different exercises, hundreds of grammar rules with no reference to the real world and it seemed that learning languages takes years and it’s extremely boring. But I was wrong. Learning languages can be easy, but only if you learn on your own.

I’ve come to the realization that it’s not about studying a language. It’s not about grammar rules. It’s not about when to use “the” or “a/an”. It’s not about learning hundreds of words from wordlists. And it’s definitely not about doing pointless exercises from a handbook.

So, if it’s not about studying a language, then what? Well, it’s pretty simple. You need to USE your target language, in this case English. Languages are for people, you don’t want to learn a language to understand its grammar or its vocabulary (unless you are a philologist or something like this).

You want to learn English to use it: speak with native speakers, read English websites or books, participate in message boards, write to English speakers, listen to English music and understand lyrics and so on.

So, what should you do? Yep, just use it. It’s okay to learn the basics of a language in a more conventional way (for example from an interactive course) but if you already speak some English, you just need to start using it as much as you can.

Make a list of things that you do on a daily basis. And then try to do these things in English. Some simple examples: watching movies, listening to podcasts, reading blogs or books, speaking with friends, listening to music, watching TV. Yep, you can do all of these things in English.

And this is the whole “secret”. Stop looking for a new method that will make you a fluent English speaker overnight and just get off your ass and start USING English. Really, it’s that simple.
